Nec me animi fallit Graiorum obscura reperta difficile inlustrare Latinis versibus esse, multa novis verbis praesertim cum sit agendum propter egestatem linguae et rerum novitatem…
“I am well aware that it is not easy to eludicate in Latin verse the obscure discoveries of the Greeks. The poverty of our language and the novelty of the theme often compel me to coin new words for the purpose.” -Lucretius, On the Nature of the Universe
Here is an absolutely brilliant Latin thinker, a man whose sole surviving work all but shaped the nature of the Italian Renaissance, and he is standing in awe of the language of the Greeks as I stand in awe of Latin. To him, his own tongue is too poor to properly convey the ideas of the Greeks! He thinks Latin is too paltry a language to write in! GAH! It things like this that remind me why I love being a little baby Classicist.
